St Fagans – Step Back in Time (Without Leaving Cardiff)

If you only visit one museum while you’re in Cardiff, make it St Fagans National Museum of History.
But calling it a “museum” doesn’t quite do it justice.
This place is more like a living village. Spread across beautiful grounds just outside the city, St Fagans is made up of over 40 historic buildings that have been carefully moved from different parts of Wales and rebuilt here.
So instead of looking at history behind glass, you actually walk through it.
One minute you’re stepping inside a traditional Welsh farmhouse, the next you’re in an old school, a bakery, or even a chapel. It’s immersive in a way most museums just aren’t.
There are often live demonstrations too — things like blacksmithing, baking, or traditional crafts — which makes it feel even more real.
It’s also one of those places that works for everyone. If you’re visiting as a couple, it’s a relaxed, interesting day out. If you’ve got kids, there’s loads of space to explore. And if you just want somewhere peaceful to wander for a few hours, it’s perfect.
And the best part? It’s completely free.
